The expiration date of a drug is the final day that the manufacturer guarantees the full potency and safety of a medication. It does not indicate a point when a medication loses potency and is no longer effective or becomes harmful. Drug potency begins to reduce from the moment it is manufactured; it is not in any way spontaneous after expiry date.

It is found on most medication labels, including prescription, over-the-counter (OTC), dietary and herbal supplements. It is a requirement by law for manufacturers to place expiration dates on drug products before they enter the market.

For legal and liability reasons, manufacturers will not make recommendations about the stability of drugs past the original expiration date since they probably did not test beyond that for prolonged effectiveness.

Drug products typically have an expiration that extends from 12 to 60 months from the time of manufacture. Once the original container is opened, either by the patient or the health care provider who will dispense the drug, that original expiration date on the container can no longer be completely relied upon. Hence it is usually advised to buy as needed to avoid unused open drugs.

Drugs can deteriorate fast if stored improperly and may not be ideal for use even before the expiration date. Hence proper storage methods should be employed.
